| Barbara Smuts, PhD |
Barbara holds an undergraduate degree in Anthropology and a Ph.D. in Behavioral Biology from Stanford University. A professor of psychology, she teaches courses in animal behavior at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Barbara has studied social behavior in several wild animals, including olive baboons, chimpanzees and bottlenose dolphins. More recently, she has studied social relationships among domestic dogs. Her publications include Sex and Friendship in Baboons, Primate Societies, and many scientific articles. She is currently working on a book about social relationships in dogs.
Dr. Smuts has also written about animals and human-animal relationships for a broader audience in magazines such as Natural History, American Scientist, Discover Magazine, and Bark. Her aim is to disseminate knowledge about dog behavior … knowledge which will be useful to both canine professionals and ordinary people who want to understand and improve the lives of dogs.
