| Jennifer Sobie, PhD, CPDT, DVM |
Dr. Jennifer Sobie received her Ph.D. in behavior analysis from Western Michigan University. Jennifer served as investigator on a number of studies evaluating treatment outcome in reduction of aggressive behavior in dogs, and the effect of changing reinforcement schedules on the acquisition and maintenance of pet behavior.
As an instructor at Western Michigan, Jennifer supervised undergraduate and graduate students interested in the specialization of applied animal behavior. She developed a program in which students used both an understanding of dog behavior and analytic principles to improve the adoptability of abandoned dogs in local shelters.
Dr. Sobie works for the ASPCA as a behaviorist in their Animal Behavior Center, and teaches at the University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign. Jennifer is a founding member of the Special Interest Group (SIG) on Animal Training for the Association for Behavior Analysis, and currently serves as Chair of the SIG.
Dr. Sobie’s experience includes evaluation of behavioral pharmacological interventions in pet behavior. As an investigator and clinical consultant, she served as an advocate for enrichment for the kenneled dogs and provided behavior consultation and obedience instruction for home placement of the dogs upon their retirement.
Dr. Sobie is a frequent contributor to breed and dog publications. Her writing includes the column “This Rough Magic: Learning Theory as it Applies to Dog Training” for Front and Finish: The Dog Trainer’s News.
Jennifer has been a successful obedience competitor with a number of high-placing dogs; her Welsh terrier, Am. Can. Ch. BBP’s Edition Am. Can. UKC CDX, C of G, earned Dog World awards and rating as the top performing Welsh terrier in obedience. “Dino” was also the first Welsh terrier to earn a UKC CDX.
