It’s spring already, and how time flies by!
This month we wanted to discuss how April’s showers can bring some rewarding behavior from your pet. Showering your pet with “reward based training” is easy to do and is the way to achieve a happier pet.
Two local ladies, from right here in our own backyard, have received positive reinforcement for their dedication to dog training. Last month, Kellyann Conway and Traci Theis were selected as co-winners of the 2006 Outstanding Trainer of the Year Award for their technique with reward based training.
So, what exactly is reward based training?
“Animals can be motivated to do the things you need them to do by using positive rewards,” states Conway. She adds that treats, toys, play time and social contact can all become incentives for pets’ depending on what motivates them best individually. “There are no physical consequences if the animal doesn’t do something correctly,” adds Conway.
“We’ve been practicing reward based training for over 15 years. It is the evolution of training.” adds Theis.
So, how can reward based training help you and your pets?
Well, besides creating a healthier relationship with you and your pet, reward based training is very rewarding for pet owners too!
Theis and Conway have developed a revolutionary way to educate using the PetsIncredible DVD and the internet. You can obtain a DVD through local shelters and rescue groups; it is free when you adopt a pet.
You can also go to petvideo.com and watch individual segments pertaining to what it is that you’re looking for. It doesn’t matter whether you have a puppy or an adult dog; our techniques are for pets of any age.
Want to look into a trainer who can help you with this technique?
Theis and Conway tell us to log on to www.APDT.com and search for a trainer. Always interview the trainer and ask about their techniques. You can also reach Theis and Conway at PetsIncredible by calling (727) 937-2999 or logging on to www.petsincredible.com.
