An Explanation of APDT Membership Levels

You will notice when going through APDT's Trainer Search Directory that there are two separate categories of APDT membership. These are:

  • Premium Professional
  • Professional

There are two separate categories of APDT membership...

Professional Premium Members – Premium Professional members are full and part-time trainers and behavior consultants who work for income or as volunteers. These members teach group classes, do private consults, and may work in a shelter, veterinary or other training setting such as service dog, animal assisted intervention, working dog, and sports dog training, to name a few. This category, provides additional benefits, services and discounts for members who want to increase their service level from the association. Professional Premium members may or may not be certified – please review their trainer search individual entries for more information on each trainer.

Professional Members – Professional members are full and part-time trainers and behavior consultants who work for income or as volunteers. These members teach group classes, do private consults, and may work in a shelter, veterinary or other training setting such as service dog, animal assisted intervention, working dog, and sports dog training, to name a few. Professional members may or may not be certified – please review their trainer search individual entries for more information on each trainer.

Certification
The APDT Board of Trustees recognizes the list of certifications below in order for an APDT member to be considered a certified pet dog trainer. The criteria used to determine certification is the association and education industry-wide standard:

  • The certifying organization must be independent with no ties to schools or academies.
  • The certification must require a test or procedure to measure experience, skill level and knowledge.
  • The certification must pertain specifically to the field (dog training and behavior).
  • The certification must require continuing education in the form of continuing education units (CEUs).

Chronicile of the Dog

The quarterly APDT Chronicle of the Dog keeps APDT members abreast of contemporary pet dog training techniques and provides a lively forum for discussion of dog training and behavior issues.

The corporation is organized for charitable and educational purposes within the meaning of 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986.

The purpose of the foundation is to raise funds for scientific research and of education  of dog trainers.
